The motivation to get this cable window restrictor was to hold a window with broken mechanism from opening too much.The installation was simple, drilling into UPVC window and window frame was easy and due to the fact that the covers of the window restrictor can be removed it was super simple to precisely know where to drills.It holds the window well, we don't even lock it!

I'm not very impressed by this window restrictor. It has a really hopeless lock; with a cheap and nasty key and it's really fiddly to operate if it's fitted in a confined space.On the positive side it seems robust and well capable of giving long term service. It is simple to install but I had to use my own fixings as the screws provided were not suitable for the location I wanted it for.I wanted to use it on a metal-framed opening. The screws provided were far too long @ 45mm so I hunted around and found some of those self-drilling screws that are often used to fix ply lining to the inside of vans. Fortunately they fitted well and the plastic cap was still able to sit properly in position.The cable is plastic sheathed with metal capped ends. It's like a short length of bicycle brake cable with perhaps a wee bit heavier guage.My problem with the item is the locking mechanism. To my mind it lets the whole thing down by being fiddly and imprecise. When my restrictor arrived I could not get the key to turn at all. No matter how I tried it would not budge. Eventually I had to use a screwdriver to move the locking plate out of the way. I got it working but it felt stiff and gritty when the locking plate was moving. Some ceramic lubricant helped and after a while it seemed to be moving much more freely. A point worth noting is that, unlike most locks which require they key to be turned in one direction to open it and in the opposite direction to lock it, this one operates by turning the key in one direction only. It seems that the locking plate is moved by a cam mechanism in the lock and that turning the key just rotates the cam so that it is in or out. The locking plate works by sitting in a little groove in the bolt. Turning the key 180° moves the locking plate in or out of position. Simple if it works but it doesn't really.The problems are that aligning the groove in the bolt with the position of the locking plate is a bit hit and miss. The bolt is capable of being pushed too far into the lock; beyond the point where the plate is making it impossible to close without further adjustment. It's just a pain fiddling with it especially when it has been fitted in a restricted space. Add to that the fact that the key is too close to where the bolt sits and can get in the way when you are trying to lock it. Then there is the key, which is about as cheap a piece of metal as you could imagine. It's far too loose fitting in the lock, which makes the whole process feel even more imprecise, and it doesn't feel sturdy enough to last very long.So, if you are only going to be using the lock on an occasional basis then it might be fine for your needs. I need to use it umpteen times a day and whilst I may get more adept at using it, I'm still not convinced that the lock is secure as I would like.

The restrictor allows enough of an opening to get some airflow, but not enough for any accidents, which is exactly what I needed. It’s also a nice deterrent for security purposes, adding an extra layer to prevent someone from forcing a window open from the outside.If there’s one thing that could be improved, it’s the length of the screws provided. They work fine for thinner windows, but I ended up using some slightly longer ones for a more secure fit in my larger frames. We have just installed some huge windows in our conservatory, which is on the second floor. The risk of plumetting to your death or, at least, several broken bones is potentially quite high so I thought I'd take some precautions,The restictor is easy to fit and, as it can be unlocked, it's still possible to open the windows enough to clean them. My only issue with it is that the cable is a little shorter than I would have liked which restricts the opening more than I would like.But it is stong and works wells, just a little short.
